Calluna Vineyards | Spotlight on the 2009 Calluna Vineyards Cuvee - Rated 92 points and a best buy ~ Wine and Spirits Magazine | Price:$33
Please Note:  You can taste the 09 Cuvée and other Calluna wines at the Winter Wineland event this weekend in Sonoma.  To find us, look on the event material for Vinoteca, our winery site tasting room.  The current offering on the 09 Cuvée, shown below, will be open through the end of next week…

Although a portion of this review was in my last email, I wanted to make the following observation. A few years ago, I recall pulling out an old Joseph Phelps Insignia for some friends. It was excellent and, I felt, could stand very well next to a great wine of Bordeaux. I commented that I would like to make a wine of this stature some day from the vineyards I planted at Calluna.

This Wine & Spirits review has my 2009 Calluna Vineyards Cuvée rated one point above Phelps Insignia. I wasn't envisioning attaining my goal this quickly - nor do I put too much stock in the numerical comparisons here, despite the serious reputations of these writers.

So I don't claim any great victory yet. However, I do feel that being favorably compared to Insignia as well as Dominus and other established names does indicate that the 2009 CVC is a well made wine. It is one that I am proud of. And, at a price far lower than most others on this review list, it is one that I feel I can recommend that you try.

It is a young wine - made for the table - already generous, and full of even greater promise for the future.

From the Wine & Spirits Review...
"David Jeffrey escaped from corporate finance at Seagrams to pursue a career in wine making. He moved his family to Fresno in the early 2000s to study enology; worked a stage in St Emillion; and eventually found 80 acres on Chalk Hill, planting 12 to vines. There's a bright and simple beauty to this Cuvée, his "Right Bank" blend emphasizing merlot and cabernet franc. Its tannins are saturated with the flavor of spicy red fruit, finishing on a sachet of herbs, zesty, firm and fine." (784 cases made)
