Once again, we have been setting records in California, this time for the driest December ever and record warm temperatures in January. While this might be lovely for those of us that enjoy January beach days, it's not the best thing for our grapes. The plants get very confused and think it is spring. We had apical meristem bud break at the end of December! (Apical meristem is a fancy scientific term for the tip of the plant shoot.) What exactly does this mean for the plants? We are very susceptible to spring frosts here, and any exposed new plant tissue can freeze and die. That would be very, very bad. However, if we don't have any spring frosts, we could have an early harvest. Keep your fingers crossed... SAVE THE DATE!
