For any young winery fighting the good fight, it's nice to hear from folks who believe we're on the right track. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar recently published its report on the latest releases from California's North Coast. So, if you can't make it to the vineyard this summer to taste for yourself, allow Stephen to provide some context.
"Dark red. High-pitched aromas and flavors of cherry skin, red currant, tobacco and herbs. Smooth and juicy in the mouth; surprisingly supple and voluminous following the nose. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and very good focus and length." |
"Saturated ruby-red. Brooding nose offers currant, bitter chocolate, camphor and herbs. Supple on entry, then quite backward and dry, even a bit youthfully clenched, in the middle. Some dried herb notes are currently blocking the wine's underlying fruit. A serious tannic spine suggests that this wine will need time to loosen up." |
"Good full, deep red. Cherry, currant, licorice and smoke on the nose. Supple, fat and concentrated; delivers a lovely glyceral texture without any excess sweetness, in the way of a top Bordeaux from the Right Bank. Has the supple middle to support its dusty tannins. Very interesting California merlot with the balance to age." |
"Bright, deep ruby. Dark aromas of black cherry and licorice. Sweet, layered and lush on entry, then tighter in the middle, offering intense dark berry, licorice and tobacco flavors. Leanish in an Old World way and not yet showing its inherent complexity, this seriously structured wine will need time to absorb its substantial toothcoating tannins. A serious cabernet for the cellar, and a distinct step up from the 2008 version." |
