Celebrate our St. Claire Vineyard
Pinot Noir with us!
Throughout March we will be celebrating St. Clair Vineyard Pinot Noir with special vertical tastings and sales.
Jim St. Clair was a sixth generation farmer and wine pioneer in Carneros. When he planted his 10 acre Pinot Noir Vineyard in 1968, he selected budwood from the same source as the Beckstoffer Las Amigas Vineyard. Despite the shared source and the two vineyards’ proximity, they make remarkably different wines and the distinctions are in the aromatics. These subtle nuances develop from our dry farming, a practice that forces the roots to be efficient in their pursuit of water deep within the soil.
We have made a Pinot Noir consecutively from the St. Clair Vineyard for over 31 years—this vintage will be the last we will produce, so let’s give it a great send off!
Winter in the Vineyard
We prune the vines during the winter months when they are sleeping. This is one of the most important activities in the vineyard; through pruning we can reduce the number of buds to promote the perfect balance between shoot growth and grape cluster.
At Acacia, individual lots of wine are kept separate and tasted regularly by the winemaking team. The art of blending wine adds complexity, balance and keeps the vintage consistent from bottle to bottle. While the actual blending occurs around June, this is a great time to barrel sample the new vintage.

The February Mix Club - 2010 Winery Lake Pinot Noir & 2010 Winery Lake Chardonnay
The Winery Lake Vineyard is a historical vineyard in the Carneros Appellation. Originally planted in the 1960’s by the art collector Rene di Rosa, this unique vineyard is set among low rolling hills that include 180 acres of vineyard planted primarily to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Winery Lake Vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were produced and bottled at Acacia for a few vintages in the early ‘80s and then again beginning in 2004. Originally the vineyard was planted with widely spaced vines and a large amount of fruit was used for sparkling wine production. During the ‘90’s the vineyard was replanted with an increased number of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay clones, and greater vine density. On a walk through the vineyard you may see both volcanic rock and fossilized seashells. The complexity of the geographic history is reflected in the wines produced as each block draws different characteristics from its particular soils. The resulting flavors add up to an unusually complex and fascinating blend of fruit that is ripened under the best conditions possible.
