Tom Rinaldi's Thoughts on Harvest 2012 When we asked Tom Rinaldi what he thought of the wine grape growing season thus far, his first response was, "Giddy!". Tom is not one to mince words, so you know he has high hopes for the 2012 vintage. "It's the first normal harvest since 2009", and that has everyone excited. "So far the weather has been flawless" remarked Rinaldi, "and we expect harvest to begin by Labor Day". Even though verasion (the ripening of grapes from opaque to translucence) is occurring now, the 2012 crop looks "larger than usual, and above average" according to Rinaldi. He did add, "but not as much as 2005." As Tom biked away from the winery he stopped to double check the Sauvignon Blanc clusters and gave a thumbs-up! Hewitt "Double Plus" ++ Finally Released If it has ++ on the label from the Hewitt Vineyard, you know it's outstanding. Our entire team spent four months searching for a name for our first ever "reserve of the reserve" Hewitt. We dug down into the Hewitt Family archives; we thought of obscure geological references to the soil in the vineyard and our legal team thwarted us for approval for non-trademarked names. Finally Tom Rinaldi came up with Hewitt "Double Plus", or as we affectionately call it, the "HDP". Double Plus is what the winemakers assign the best barrels of the Hewitt when they perform their tastings of the barrels. There were only 5 barrels of this wine produced (150 cases) of this inaugural vintage, available to the general public for the first time! To order, call the winery at 866.946.3252.
