Fall in Love This Month
Are you on cloud nine? We certainly are! With the amazing ZAP Festival, hosted by the Zinfandel Advocates and Producers, our Wine, Love & Chocolate event and the seventh annual Dark & Delicious Petite Sirah event taking place this month, we are all love and roses. If you aren’t able to celebrate with us in person, we hope that you’ll consider celebrating life, love and good wine with a bottle of our 2010 Pickett Road Petite Sirah.

A Note from John Kane
What wine will you be enjoying this month? With all the rain we’ve had lately, I’ve been enjoying Petite Sirahs. I had a 2009 Rockpile the other night that was perfect for the 28° F weather.

We’ve been busy racking all the 2012 barrels and tanks to get them ready for aging. It was a big harvest and I’m still trying to find room for all the amazing wine. Bottling will kick off in April.

These days with the little ones, Valentine’s Day is a family affair—as some of you might understand. Kelly and I will be sharing a 2005 Henry Zinfandel and some sloppy kisses from the kids. For those who aren’t there yet, I hope you’ll be sharing a bottle of something special with someone special.

Get to Know Dick Keenan
Our grower Dick Keenan considers himself an optimist—winegrowers almost have to be, by definition. And they also have to love change and storytelling, because in the wine business, every vintage is different and every vintage has a story.

In 2000, in an act of optimism, Dick and his wife planted the Kick Ranch Vineyard near Santa Rosa. Kick Ranch came with its own story—one written by optimists. In 1854, a pioneer family traveled by covered wagon nearly 2,000 miles from Council Bluffs, Nebraska, to start a new life in the small village of Santa Rosa. They bought some land and planted 25 acres of vineyards. Over the years, through Prohibition and hard times, the vines disappeared. As it turns out, Dick and Kathy didn’t just plant Kick Ranch—they restored it to the purpose first set almost 150 years earlier.

Although he drove a Chevrolet and not a Conestoga wagon, Dick made his way to California like a true pioneer. By 14, he had traveled with his family on trailer trips through 45 states. He went on to graduate from a military high school in Richmond, Virginia, from the University of Notre Dame and from Yale Law School—a good base for any storyteller.

Dick was practicing law when he met Kathy in San Francisco, her hometown. As a trial lawyer, he was no wallflower, but he has fallen head-over-heels for the hospitality and optimism he’s found in the wine business.

In 2000, Rosenblum Cellars was the first winery to see Kick Ranch’s potential and to give Dick a planting. Since then, Kick Ranch been our partner in growing premium grapes. In 2003, we released our first Kick Ranch-designate Syrah and Petite Sirah wines, and in 2008 Acacia Vineyard began making small lots of Kick Ranch Syrah. Dick has regular tastings and talks with John Kane and Matthew Glynn to check in and trade stories.

While many thought 2012 was an exceptional vintage, Dick can’t wait for the 2013 vintage to begin—after all, he’s an optimist.

Get to Know Kick Ranch Vineyard
Kick Ranch is located in Rincon Valley, northeast of Santa Rosa, in Sonoma County. It sits on the western side of the northern flank of Spring Mountain, which separates Sonoma County from Napa County. Its soils, composed of volcanic and other rocks, contribute a rich minerality to wines. The vines enjoy perfect sun exposure, and a 20-mile vista down to the Petaluma Wind Gap provides the cool nights and foggy mornings that are ideal for growing premium winegrapes.

Kick Ranch’s goal is to be known as one of the select California vineyards for Rhône-style varietals. Owned by Dick Keenan, it is meticulously farmed by Glenn Alexander and his Bacchus Vineyard Management team.
