The 2011 Feather offers an impressive intensity and purity of flavor, displayed on a core of mocha-scented blackberry, dark currant and ripe plum flavors, followed by hints of dried herbs, licorice and oak spice on an expressive and persistent finish. Feather is Randy Dunn's only wine produced outside of California, and the 2011 Washington vintage gave him plenty to work with. Though many California coastal vineyards struggled with a wet harvest, the Columbia Valley's September and October days were warm and cloudless, allowing the grapes to achieve physiological maturity and optimal ripening. Cool fall evenings offset the warm days to preserve the grapes' acidity and ripe tannins, resulting in wines with excellent structure and intensity. Wahluke's Weinbau and Stone Tree vineyards give the wine its dark fruit flavors, while Tri-Cities' Dionysus Vineyard and 40-year-old vines from Sagemoor Vineyard We partnered with Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari to craft Saggi - a Super Tuscan styled blend of 43% Sangiovese, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Syrah. The 2011 Saggi offers generous aromas and flavors of strawberry, red currant and anise with refined tannins and incredible balance. Vibrant, dark berry fruit and hints of baker's chocolate compliment a pleasant floral element on the mid-palate that continues across a lingering finish. Like previous vintages, the 2011 Saggi is a blend of two outstanding Washington Sangiovese vineyards. Candy Mountain Sangiovese gives the wine its dark fruit flavors and appealing notes of anise, while Dick Boushey's Yakima Valley Sangiovese adds vibrancy and liveliness. The Folonaris work closely with Sagemoor Vineyards to carefully select blocks of Cabernet they know from experience deliver elegant character and refined tannins, and Sagemoor Syrah adds to the wine's dark color and rich mid-palate. Winemaker Notes ""The name Feather is reminiscent of the silky texture and refined structure I get from the tannins in the Columbia Valley. I use the same extraction regiment for my Howell Mountain Cabernets, resulting in a firm mouthfeel that makes my wines so distinctive. In addition to the Long Shadows Feather, Randy crafts distinctive wines of high acclaim through his own Dunn Vineyards on Howell Mountain. The result is a well balanced wine focused on freshness and texture.” - Philippe Melka About Ambrogio and Giovanni The Folonaris are among Italy's oldest and most prestigious Tuscan wine families with a winemaking history dating back to the late 1700s. Ambrogio Folonari has been an outspoken advocate for Italian wine quality, and is the winemaker behind the original "Super Tuscan" - Cabreo. Together, Ambrogio and his son Giovanni manage a collection of small, beautifully located vineyards producing primarily Tuscan “grand crus.” Their track record of producing distinctive, small-production wines with an emphasis on terroir make them the perfect choice to craft our Sangiovese-based red blend, Saggi.
